Are old Japanese temples worth preserving?
It is crystal clear that old Japanese temples are worth preserving. Although they are mainly made of wooden materials that are flammable and easily decayed, the fact that they are still well preserved shows the significance of how much people have cared for them over the years. The significance of Japan's ancient temples can be seen in aspects of history, art, and culture.
One such example is Horyuji Temple which was built in the 7th century. Fifty-five of the temple’s architectures are either registered as national treasures or important cultural relics. In addition to the valuable buildings, the temple possesses a number of Buddhist statues that are considered culturally as well as artistically important, many of which are national treasures.
To preserve old temples, experts meticulously examine every corner of the structures to ensure that the materials used are sustainable. When restoration is needed, they find ways to restore the temples using the same methods and materials that were used by ancient technicians. Often today’s experts are amazed at their ingenuity.
Old Japanese temples are not only wooden architecture, but also they are symbolic monuments for the people of the past and present who believe in Buddhism in the regions, making the temples absolutely sacred. Existing ancient temples transcend our minds to ancient days and people who shared the same religious beliefs that have been passed down through generations over the centuries.
Japan, as a nation, has a rich history in itself. Buildings that depict its history not only hold historical value but also possess artistic and cultural significance. Therefore, it is important to preserve the Japan’s ancient temples as a national heritage for future generations.
