- <div>Benefits and drawbacks of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in education</div><div><br></div>A survey conducted by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan has revealed that there is insignificant difference indicated in the performance of academic aptitude scores for students who are learning with Information Communication Technology (ICT) from those of students who do not use ICT. However, those who scored higher while utilizing ICT exhibited a remarkable development in active learning and self-directed-problem-solving.<br><br>There are numerous study apps which are available for students to study. YouTube offers educational contents that they can easily watch and learn. Some social media platforms, such as LINE, provide online communities called OpenChat where students can receive free tutoring. Additionally, thanks to artificial intelligence （AI）, students can learn almost any subjects by simply inquiring information they want. Thus, ICT has expanded the possibilities for students who are eager to delve into the area of their interests. <div><br></div><div>While students are getting adept at learning with ICT, teachers and parents have to keep up with new technologies and keep their eyes on children while they use a smartphone or tablet in order to ensure that they are using the technology in an appropriate way.<br><br></div><div>Although ICT provides practical learning experiences, it also has drawbacks as well. For example, ICT may mislead students to incorrect information. Learning through free online tutoring may lead them to unexpected encounters with adults who approach them with malicious intentions. Overuse of social media is highly harmful for children, causing them to be unable to take adequate sleep. Moreover, unexpected exposure to unsolicited content or online advertisements could also be perilous for children. Online interaction with strangers is causing cyber bullying, which deteriorates children’s mental health.<br><br>Therefore, when allowing kids to use a PC smartphone, or tablet, appropriate parents’ supervision is required. They may want to keep track of the time their children spend on digital devices. They may also want to filter out unsolicited information from browsers. Teaching children to strike a balance between the time they spend studying online and offline is crucial. Last but not least, it is essential for parents to spend quality time with children. Allowing them to be immersed in online activities might lead them to close-minded and deprive them of conversations with their parents.<br><br>In conclusion, ICT is great and useful technology for education, providing children with innovative learning experiences and even improve their academic performances. However, parental control under the appropriate supervision is necessary. As information technology advances, the role of adults is going to be a key for children’s success in education. </div>

- 仕事の話
- 今回は仕事の話でもします。私は現役の介護士でもあるんですが、<wbr>仕事柄他職種連携と言ってさまざまな専門分野の職種が協力してお<wbr>年寄りの福祉のために働いています。<wbr>私は生活に関わること全般のお世話をする役割を担っています。<wbr>看護師は、医療的ケアを提供します。薬の管理や傷の治療、採血、<wbr>点滴、胃ろうと言って胃に直接栄養を流したりします。<wbr>提携先の病院があり、<wbr>医師が定期的に診察に来て薬の内容の検討をしたり、<wbr>入院の可否を決めて病院に受け入れたりしてくれます。<wbr>ケアマネージャーは利用者の家族とのやりとり、病院、<wbr>役所などとの折衝、調整を行います。<wbr>他にもたくさんの人が関わって福祉の仕事が成り立っています。<br><br>これは、<wbr>チームで行われる働きですから誰が偉くて誰が下とかいうわけでは<wbr>ありません。でも、指示を出す人がいます。医師から看護師へ、<wbr>看護師から介護士へと言った感じに。問題になるのが、<wbr>時々医療面で指示を出す人たちが偉そうに振る舞う事なんです。<wbr>これは完全に間違いなんですが介護の世界ではありがちです。<wbr>他の職種でもあるかもしれません。<wbr>取引先の会社が下請けの会社に横柄な態度をとるようなことがあり<wbr>ます。<wbr>上司が部下にきつい言い方でけなしたりすることがあります。<wbr>これ、やられる方は非常に腹立たしいです。私は介護士ですから、<wbr>看護側から言われたらその指示に職務上従う義務があります。<wbr>でも、偉そうに、皮肉を込めて言われたら頭にきます。<br><br>ですから、その看護師には謙虚であって欲しいです。<wbr>なんでそんなに偉そうなのかは知りませんが、<wbr>高く伸びた鼻は一度でも二度でも折られなければなりません。<wbr>人と一緒に働くのであれば、謙虚な心を持ってないと駄目です。<wbr>嫌われますから。一緒にやりたくないって思われますからね。<wbr>どんなに賢くて、技術があろうが、<wbr>高慢な人は組織の中では嫌われるんです。もしかしたら、<wbr>そういう人は他人を見下すのが日常的になり過ぎて自分が高慢であ<wbr>る事にも気づかないでいるかもしれません。<wbr>むしろ私たちの欠点ばかりに目が行っており、<wbr>私たちに不満がある状態の可能性すらあります。<wbr>そういう人間は外面だけは取り繕っており、<wbr>上司や外部の人間には愛想よく振る舞う傾向があります。<br><br>中学生、<wbr>高校生がもしこのコラムを読んだら気に留めておいてください。<wbr>謙虚でへりくだった心で感謝の気持ちを忘れずに誠実に仕事をする<wbr>人になってください。世界から愛される日本人はそういう人です。<wbr>そして、<wbr>高ぶっていろいろ勘違いした大人にはならないように気をつけてく<wbr>ださい。以上、仕事の話でした。

- 苦手な事から最初に取り組む

It is crucial to understand your weaknesses. But don’t just ignore them. Face and accept them and then analyze your weak points. Maybe you don’t know how to tackle your problems. They may be too overwhelming for you to even think about. <div><br></div><div>However, by analyzing your weak points, you can breakdown and simplify your problems. For example, if you are not good at math, do your own research to see what fields of mathematics you find difficulty in understanding. Once you have reviewed your math proficiency, you can take a step forward to learn the basics all over again. It will take some time for you to understand them, but you will learn better this way. I strongly recommend that you prioritize to study the subject you don’t like or aren’t comfortable with first and make a habit of doing so. You can study rest of the subjects later and review what you have studied earlier in the end of your study session. This study routine will help you strengthen your uncomfortable subjects. Finally determination is the key to success in overcoming your weaknesses. Now get rolling and embark on a journey of learning and self-improvement. </div>

- 新年度にあたってのメッセージ
- 今日４月１日から新年度ですね。新年度にあたって継続する力、継続するって大切だな、またそれができるって凄いなと改めて思うので書き記したいと思います。<br><br>「うさぎと亀」<wbr>の話皆知ってると思うんですが、<wbr>能力が高くてあっという間に遠くまで行けるうさぎとゆっく<wbr>りしか進めない亀ですが、うさぎは途中で休んでしまい亀に抜かれてしまいますよね。能力があっても、<wbr>それを高いまま持続させる事はなかなか難しいと思わされます。また<wbr>人間は時に休むことも必要です。しかし、<wbr>無理の無いペースで地に足をつけて継続すると長い目で見た時に高<wbr>い地点、遠くに到達する可能性が高いと思います。<br><br>人間というのは個人差があるので人より秀でてるものもあれば劣っ<wbr>ているところもあるでしょう。ただ、<wbr>自分なりの目標を持って継続的に努力する事ができる人は強いと言えるので<wbr>はないでしょうか。<wbr>勉強でも仕事でも運動でも同じことが言えます。<br><br>英語学習においては、<wbr>正しい方法で学ぶ必要はありますが毎日聴く、読む、<wbr>新しい単語に出会う事が大切だと思っていて、<wbr>その積み重ねが力になるのだと思います。<br><br>今日から新年度ということで、新しい学年や、進学、<wbr>社会人になる方もたくさんいらっしゃいます。<wbr>最初は慣れるまで大変でしょうが、<wbr>ぜひ何かしら目標を立ててそれに向かってコツコツと努力してくだ<wbr>さい。そして時々来た道のりを振り返って見てください。<wbr>そうしたら大分、遠くまできたな、成長したなと思えるはずです。<wbr>同じ環境にいると自分と人を比べてしまいがちですが、<wbr>自分を人と比べる必要はありません。人はそれぞれ違います。<wbr>違っていていいんです。なぜかというと、<wbr>役割がそれぞれに異なるからです。<wbr>世の中みんな同じ仕事をしていれば社会は成り立ちません。<wbr>千差万別の役割を一人一人が担う事でこの社会がうまく機能してい<wbr>るわけですから、自分がどの役割を担うのか、<wbr>将来何になりたいのか、<wbr>それを成し遂げるために日々継続して学び成長するという意識を持<wbr>って生きていきましょう。 今日の一日の努力の積み重ねが１年後、３年後の自分に繋がります。その事をぜひ意識していただいて、今日から始まる新年度に向かって足を踏み出してください。

- <h3><em><strong>Contemplating on Cultural Diversity in Japan</strong></em></h3><div><br></div>Cultural diversity is no longer something to overcome, but rather to cherish as we live in a global society where people migrate around the world in search of a better life.<br><br>Although Japanese is a homogeneous people, the number of foreigners has ever been increasing. Lots of foreign workers are coming from Asia. We see them even in countryside. As it is predicted that Japan will continue to experience declining population as years ahead, Japan will be likely to accept more foreign workers.<br><br>Both Japanese and foreigners will have to co-inhabit in the same society. While foreign workers learn a Japanese language and culture, Japanese people also need to understand their cultures and customs so that both can live in harmony with each other. Through mutual understanding, cultural diversity can bring about fruitful development to our communities.<br><br>Local communities must be inclusive of their friends from the world, not making them uncomfortable and isolated from communities. In the events such as summer festivals held by local communities, foreign neighbors are expected to join and be actively involved in local affairs so that they can feel at home. Through incessant efforts, we will be able to build trusting relationships between Japanese and foreign friends.<br><br>In Sasebo city, Nagasaki Prefecture, an attempt was made to hold a sport festival for local people and foreigners who live there in hopes to create a friendly atmosphere that foreigners are welcome, and that they are an essential part of the community.<br><br>Much effort is needed to support foreigners in case of emergency. There were cases that language barrier had hindered them from reaching necessary information in the time of Great East Japan Earthquake in Tohoku region.<br><br>Improving public service for foreigners is still an ongoing issue. Creating foreigner-friendly environment for better accessibility and easier navigation in major facilities is highly recommended, and it can be achieved by incorporating signs in multiple languages in public places such as airports and train stations. TV broadcast should prepare footages of emergency caution in multiple languages in advance, so that foreigners can quickly evacuate. The government should take legislative measures to ensure that foreigners can receive adequate public assistance such as child-rearing support just as Japanese citizens. It may be a good idea to deploy translators as a concierge in municipal offices in cities where a lot of foreigners live.<br><br>Some may argue that the government shouldn’t allocate fund for foreigners because they are not citizens. However, this argument fails to acknowledge that they are inevitable entities in our society, contributing to the welfare and economic development in Japan. Funding to support them and to meet their needs ultimately benefit Japanese citizens.<br><br>Once foreign people were aliens who were thought as strangers, or at most tourists visiting for a short time, but now they are just as important as local citizens. With this notion in our mind, we will have to accelerate our efforts to improve foreigners’ living conditions.

- The benefits and drawbacks of globalization on developing countries<br><br>The world economy has been developing as humanity explores new world to find resources and expands its territory to meet the growing demands of increasing population. Globalization started in the 15th century during the Age of Exploration, European nations such as England, Netherlands, Spain and Portugal traveled extensively to Africa, Asia and America, conquering the regions to establish trade routes, bringing gold, silver, spices and salt back to their countries. They also brought people from Africa as slaves.<br><br>Today’s developed countries haven’t changed the ways they behave just as former countries that had once colonized the regions, and the colonized regions became today’s developing countries. Unlike back then, the governing system of each developing country is well established and has become more sophisticated. Each individual nation can equally deal with other nations in diplomatic relations or trade deals. The global economy lets these developing countries take part in global businesses. Developing nations can bring investments to their countries, improving infrastructures such as sea and air ports, building new bridges, and constructing highways and railways.<br><br>While globalization has brought significant benefits to developing countries, there are drawbacks to this, which are not fair. There are many cases that have been reported that companies from developed nations are exploiting local people in producing their products. This is nothing but another form of slavery. The local people are often paid poultry amount of wages. Human rights are disrespected and their lives are lightly treated by companies from developed nations.<br><br>In order to rectify this unfair treatment, NPOs such as Human Amnesty have started to check the working conditions of the local, and how much they get paid, making sure that they are not underpaid. We consumers should not be ignorant of this unfair treatment practiced by companies in developed countries. Instead, we should know where and how the products we buy and use are produced. Then we will be able to judge companies. Share holders of such companies should bring the issues on the table in stock holders’ meetings.<br><br>Humans are equally made by God. Therefore, human rights shouldn’t be taken lightly because of our economic status or our birth places. When we start having haughty minds that we are over some people or nations, everything will be messed up.

- アメリカでの大学卒業後の話
- さて、<wbr>大学生活も慣れてきて３年目juniorになり自分の専攻maj<wbr>orを決める頃になりました。<wbr>ちなみに大学1年をfreshman２年をsophomore 、4年をseniorと呼びます。当初は、<wbr>グラフィックデザインを専攻したいと思っていましたが、<wbr>定員が50人しかなくポートフォリオの提出があったため、<wbr>あきらめて誰でも専攻できるInternet and Interactive Systemsを専攻しました。<wbr>インターネットやコンピュータのテクノロジーについて満遍なく学<wbr>びました。<wbr>楽しかったのはを絵を描くdrawingや3Dモデリングの授業<wbr>で上手くできなかったのはコンピュータプログラミングの授業でし<wbr>た。３年、４年となるとグループワークもやるようになり、<wbr>ゲームエンジンという、ゲームをデザインする授業もありました。<br><br><br>結局自分は、<wbr>Photoshopやイラストレーターの使い方をほぼ独学で覚え<wbr>て、後にオーランドの小さな広告代理店で広告デザインや、<wbr>情報誌のレイアウトをパソコンでやる仕事をするようになります。<wbr>大学はなんとか無事に必要単位を取って卒業することができました<wbr>。ちゃんと学士証書ももらいました。<wbr>でも卒業式には出ませんでした。<wbr>その時には既に人生の次の段階へ目を向けており卒業は通過点に過<wbr>ぎないと思っていたんですね。それに、<wbr>卒業後は就労ビザを取らないと一年後には帰国することになってい<wbr>たので尚更浮かれる気持ちはなかったのです。<br><br><br>小さな代理店は就労ビザのスポンサーにはなってくれましたが、<wbr>直ぐにはビザは取れなかったため、<wbr>一年後にまた学生ビザに切り替えてコミュニティカレッジに通いま<wbr>した。そこで、またPhotoshopの使い方を学びました。<wbr>こんなふうに学べるならコミュニティカレッジはありだなと感じま<wbr>した。最初から4大に進むのではなく、<wbr>コミュニティカレッジに2年間通い、その後単位を移行して3、<wbr>4年を大学で専攻科目を取る方が経済的なのです。<wbr>私が大学に行ったのは２３年前ですが、<wbr>海外からの留学生は州外の学生なので一般的な授業料の4倍くらい<wbr>は払わなければなりませんでした。<wbr>当時は1クラスが3単位で1単位あたり300ドルとかで900ド<wbr>ルくらいですね。<wbr>それを一学期に4クラスとるため3600ドルになります。<wbr>今は授業料かなり高騰してます。円安でもありますし、<wbr>授業料そのものが高くなってますね。<br><br><br>アメリカの生活を振り返ると、<wbr>大変なこともたくさんありましたがやっぱり充実していましたね。<wbr>公共バスの運転手と仲良くなったこともあります。洋書が好きになり、毎週本屋に行ったりもしました。<wbr>仕事は途中で会社が２つに割れてしまい、<wbr>自分はどうしたら良いのか困りましたがビザのために社長について<wbr>いきました。結局社長はそのビジネスはたたまれたみたいですが、<wbr>エネルギッシュでなかなかすごい女性でした。<wbr>当時はアメリカに永住したくてきつい生活にも耐えてました。<wbr>そういう経験ができたのは貴重な糧になったと思います。<wbr>また何か思い出したら書いていこうと思います。

- <h2>What is success in life?</h2><br>Success in life isn't just defined as acquiring abundant wealth and achieving materialistic accomplishments alongside social status. It actually means to establish a personality full of positive attributes that influence and inspire others. I cherish the latter success more than the former one because materialistic achievements are temporary while the latter success resonates in the hearts of people beyond our lifetime.<br><br>Life is a long journey. The accumulation of everyday experiences shapes you who you are. Internal elements such as passion, dreams, even sufferings, and pains will motivate you to take action. It is easy to be positive minded in times when we are filled with joy and love. But how about the times when we are desperate, filled with sadness, in which excruciating pain pierces our fragile hearts? Can you still act upon love and compassion? Most people would not be able to do so. A kind of person who has success in life can still behave in a loving manner in such challenging situations. Such a trait isn’t innate but honed through overcoming numerous challenges over time.<div><br>So whenever you face difficulties that trouble your hearts, consider them as opportunities to grow into maturity. The Bible teaches us as follows.<br><br>Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:1-4<br><br>If we could live our lives according to what the Bible teaches us, we would be able to stand strong amidst the chaos that might come against us. There is a reason for adversity, which is to test and make us to be a kind of person who can fulfill our destiny. Every person is given a mission to complete in this lifetime. In other word, we have a purpose to fulfill, which is to serve the very existence that has given us the purpose to live in this world by serving humanity. We have to find that out at an early age so that we will be able to prepare us to live our lives to the fullest, which is more valuable than just making money and satisfying ourselves. What remains in the end is how much we have done for others. In essence, success in life is solely defined by how much we have striven to live for others.<br><br>Some wealthy individuals die in misery because they have misunderstood the purpose of life. Let us not fall into the alluring traps of enemies. The enemies are invisible forces that tempt us to fall into the pleasures of this world, leading us to pursue personal satisfaction such as wealth, fame, and pleasures of this world. These are fleeting joys that disperse like mist after a while. Even so, people still go after them. Knowing the truth, you wouldn’t screw your life. Life indeed is rather hard. At times, we will be broken and collapsed, yet we should aim higher to achieve our real goals in this lifetime. - 大学進学のためアメリカへ

It’s long been discussed that Japan’s English education needs to change so that children can get to learn how to communicate in English, and that practical English skills should be taught in schools.<br><br>However, the reality is that even students at Tokyo University can barely speak English. They are supposed to be the smartest people in Japan. What this tells me is that universities in general don’t require students to have such communication skills in English. If universities in Japan do want students who speak English with fluency, they should require students to take entrance exams to assess their language proficiency in communication. The fact that they don’t incorporate speaking exams in the entrance exams means that they consider that English communication skills are not essential in an academic field in Japan. I guess this is true because students have access to the cutting edge academic resources while they are in Japan.<br><br>However, the scarcity of communication skills could limit the opportunities to acquire diverse information from abroad, thus limit the broadening and deepening of their academic attainments and weakening their global competitiveness in the future.<br><br>The issue of unskilled Japanese students in English is directly linked to economic development. In order to take the initiative in the world economic as well as academic fields, it is highly desirable to help students grow in English communication skills. Japan is no longer an economic giant in the world.
