-
Should schools focus more on developing emotional intelligence rather than academic skills?

I agree that schools should focus more on developing emotional intelligence rather than academic skills. Advanced high schools that tend to prepare students for college entrance exams mainly focus on developing their academic skills.

I feel advanced high schools somewhat overlook the importance of emotional intelligence over academic skills. What happens to some of the students in advanced schools is that when they fail to catch up with the pace of learning, they eventually drop out of school.

In fact, advanced schools haven’t offered students the opportunities to learn emotional intelligence because students who fail to graduate are often a rare occurrence. It could help them continue to learn and ultimately graduate if they understood the importance of endurance, patience, and self-management, especially when motivated to face academic challenges.

In deed, people can surmount challenges when they are driven by firm motivation and commitment based on unwavering purposes. Those who aren’t sure about their goals should be encouraged to recognize and understand their own emotions, strengths, weaknesses, values, and motivations. Understanding who they are and what they want to be or do is a key approach to setting goals for their lives. Once students know their goals, they will be able to address their own problems.

In conclusion, schools should help students develop emotional intelligence which is prerequisite to improving academic performance. In this way, students can proactively engage in learning and enhance their academic performance as well. In addition, this approach not only supports academic success but also prepares students for long-term personal and professional fulfillment.

Is it okay for transgender women to compete in women’s sports?

Too much emphasis on inclusion and equality for transgenders is disrupting not only our society but also the world of sports. As the Olympic Games continue, a controversial commotion is occurring worldwide over the women’s boxing competition. Two transgender women are participating: one from Taiwan and the other from Algeria. Both are still in the tournament, and as they continue to win their matches, the controversy seems to be growing even more significant.

Reportedly, they both participated in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, however they didn’t win the medals. This time though, an Algerian transgender woman beat up an opponent so badly that the opponent stopped fighting in less than a minute. I don’t know the reason for her quitting the fight. I guess the Algerian boxer was too strong, or maybe she wanted to express her protest competing against a transgender woman who has a male body. I truly understand that view. Whether transgender women are strong or not, they shouldn’t be treated equally as genetically proven women. In most cases, they have advantage over biological women because they tend to be more muscular and bigger in size due to skeletal differences between men and women.

IOC president Thomas Bach said “We have two boxers who are born as women, who have been raised as women, who have a passport as a woman and have competed for many years as women,”

This is such an extreme perspective. First of all, they are not born as women. I don’t know how they have been raised. But the first statement is enough to say that he is so much willing to take side with transgender equality. I’ve always been skeptical about the transgender movement, marching for the rights of marriage equality and the same legal status as ordinary married couples of men and women. Now that they even want to compete in women’s sports, and IOC accept their wishes. Woe to IOC that allows participation of transgender athletes.

What if transgender women break world records in track and field? Does IOC approve such results as official? Each sports association establishes the approval process for transgender athletes’ participation in international competitions. They monitor testosterone levels, a type of male hormone that affects muscle tissue growth and can improve overall competitiveness. Regardless of testosterone levels, there is a fundamental problem with men participating in the women’s sports. I am not against transgender athletes participating in sports as long as they are competing against other transgender athletes. I don’t know how many transgender athletes are out there. But they should understand the differences between biological women and transgender women and recognize that they are not entitled to participate in women’s sports. Therefore, if they want to compete, they should compete with others of the same gender. It’s as simple as that!

Human beings have revolutionized their way of life through inventing new technologies. The first invention was probably the use of fire in the Stone Age. Now, we have electricity to light up our homes by just turning on a switch. People rode horses as transportation, but now we have cars and trains to go around. No one in the past would have imagined that they could fly in the air and travel all around the world, but we have passenger planes flying globally.

Technology is even more progressing in the area such as artificial intelligence, space exploration, robotics, and drone vehicles. These technologies are not merely the figments of imagination or well-described science fiction stories; many of them have already been incorporated in our lives and are in the process of becoming more advanced and accessible. Imagine boarding a rocket at an artificial island port in a major city and reaching the other side of the planet within an hour. Isn’t this extraordinary? Can you also imagine humanoid robots working in factories, assembling various parts to make complex products such as cars? Well, the latter might take place in a few years in TESLA’s assembly lines according to what Elon Musk says. Future vehicles might be fully automated and driverless, taking us to designated locations without needing to hold a steering wheel.

The integration of these technologies will drastically revolutionize our lives once again just as former technologies have done before. However, utilizing these technologies will demand significant energy. For example, a single AI search consumes electricity equivalent to forty ordinary search queries. Rocket traveling is impressive, but how much energy and cost will it require? AI-driven electric vehicles and robots could also consume large amount of electricity. Therefore, we are going to need sustainable, reliable, and inexpensive energy sources to make these new technologies affordable. As we get excited about the future, we will also face challenges to overcome. Nonetheless, I am certain that we will be living in a more convenient world in the near future.

————————————

Certainly! Similarly, AI-driven electric vehicles and robots could require vast amounts of electricity. Consequently, the development of sustainable, reliable, and cost-effective energy sources is crucial to making these technologies viable and affordable.

As we look forward to a future brimming with technological marvels, we must also prepare to tackle the accompanying challenges. - The Importance of Mental Health
- The importance on mental health awareness

It is important to be aware of your mental health. The detrimental consequences of mental health will affect your body and mind. Some people suffer from sleeplessness, appetite loss, rapid weight decline, and so on. Additionally, it also affects one’s mental state. For example, some people suffer from anxiety, depression, and fears triggered by hallucinations, where individuals see or hear things that are not real.

These symptoms don’t just suddenly appear; they are often the result of prolonged exposure to extreme stress. When stress level reaches a tipping point, like water overflowing from a cup, various symptoms start to emerge.

It is said that those who are serious about their commitments tend to develop mental disorders more easily. In Japan, a lot of people experience stress from adjusting to new environment in school or the workplace. For some, making friends and coping with new relationships are challenging. They may also feel overwhelming stress from academic demands. Excessive expectations from parents can be another significant stress factor for children.

To conclude, it is critical to be aware of mental health because it can greatly damage our overall well-being. If you find yourself often feeling depressed, anxious, or sleepless, it’s important to seek help from a psychiatrist. You will need a substantial amount of time to retrieve yourself. You may need to take a break from school or work for a period of time. Ensure you get enough sleep, avoid using a smartphone before going to bed because your brain needs rest, and consider medication if recommended by a health professional. Lastly, don’t rush to recover from your mental illness. Take your time to heal yourself with a careful plan before resuming your regular routine.

- Should the death penalty be banned in Japan?

Criminals who committed vicious crimes must pay the ultimate price for their actions. However, the death penalty should not be an option since there are ethical, emotional and legal issues involved in the execution process.

To begin with, execution in each case is usually conducted by several prison officers. Each executioner is assigned to press an individual button. No one knows which button is linked to process the execution command. The problem is that actual people are taking a life away. This is no different from an act of murder isn’t it? Thus, there lies an ethical problem in the death penalty.

In addition, officers who are assigned to take part in this operation suffer greatly from an inexpressible sense of guilt, posing emotional as well as psychological concerns about the death penalty.

Lastly, there is a risk of wrongful convictions in criminal cases where a suspect utterly denies his or her criminal activities. After the death penalty is declared in the Supreme Court, it is likely that the verdict will remain unchanged. What if a suspect was innocent, and that he was actually coerced into confessing a false statement by investigators?

Considering the ethical dilemmas, emotional toll on executioners, and the risk of wrongful convictions, the death penalty should be banned in Japan. Life imprisonment offers a viable alternative that aligns with the principles of justice and humanity, allowing for both punishment and the possibility of redemption.

-
Benefits and drawbacks of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in education

A survey conducted by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan has revealed that there is insignificant difference indicated in the performance of academic aptitude scores for students who are learning with Information Communication Technology (ICT) from those of students who do not use ICT. However, those who scored higher while utilizing ICT exhibited a remarkable development in active learning and self-directed-problem-solving.

There are numerous study apps which are available for students to study. YouTube offers educational contents that they can easily watch and learn. Some social media platforms, such as LINE, provide online communities called OpenChat where students can receive free tutoring. Additionally, thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), students can learn almost any subjects by simply inquiring information they want. Thus, ICT has expanded the possibilities for students who are eager to delve into the area of their interests.

While students are getting adept at learning with ICT, teachers and parents have to keep up with new technologies and keep their eyes on children while they use a smartphone or tablet in order to ensure that they are using the technology in an appropriate way.

Although ICT provides practical learning experiences, it also has drawbacks as well. For example, ICT may mislead students to incorrect information. Learning through free online tutoring may lead them to unexpected encounters with adults who approach them with malicious intentions. Overuse of social media is highly harmful for children, causing them to be unable to take adequate sleep. Moreover, unexpected exposure to unsolicited content or online advertisements could also be perilous for children. Online interaction with strangers is causing cyber bullying, which deteriorates children’s mental health.

Therefore, when allowing kids to use a PC smartphone, or tablet, appropriate parents’ supervision is required. They may want to keep track of the time their children spend on digital devices. They may also want to filter out unsolicited information from browsers. Teaching children to strike a balance between the time they spend studying online and offline is crucial. Last but not least, it is essential for parents to spend quality time with children. Allowing them to be immersed in online activities might lead them to close-minded and deprive them of conversations with their parents.

In conclusion, ICT is great and useful technology for education, providing children with innovative learning experiences and even improve their academic performances. However, parental control under the appropriate supervision is necessary. As information technology advances, the role of adults is going to be a key for children’s success in education.
